Sanjay Chauhan

Hey Georg, Tell us something about yourself to our audience.

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

I have been around TYPO3 since 2005 and mostly known for my extensions which started with the prefix “rg” like rgsmoothgallery. The most used extension is for sure “news”.

Q2
Sanjay Chauhan

First question, How did you initially get involved with TYPO3?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

I supported a nonprofit organization of my mother and after using Frontpage and Dreamweaver, I searched for a CMS as a replacement and ended up with TYPO3

Q3
Sanjay Chauhan

How do you contribute to TYPO3? How does your company encourage open source business practices?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

Besides being part of the core team as a framework merger I invest a lot of time into creating extensions and maintaining those.
Since Summer 2020 I also teach at the FH-Oberösterreich (https://www.fh-ooe.at)
My employer strongly believes in Open-Source and sponsors quite some hours as well.

Q4
Sanjay Chauhan

As a TYPO3 Professional, What was your biggest challenge to building your TYPO3 business? Do you have any special tips & tricks for TYPO3 business people?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

Do what you can do best vs learning new things. While I am definitely a so-called backend developer I currently spend some time learning the current frontend techniques.
Special tip: Be an active part of the community which enables you to easily stay in contact with top developers to learn from and to ask if you got some problems to solve.

Q5
Sanjay Chauhan

Over the years, the TYPO3 open source ecosystem has evolved. When you look back, Are you surprised or feel lucky with the overall success of TYPO3? Where do you see it going in the future?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

Feeling very lucky to be able to shape the future and to benefit from the sucess. Not only TYPO3 has evolved but the web in overall

Q6
Sanjay Chauhan

Can you give us a sneak peek of TYPO3's future visions?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

TYPO3 should not only be the best tool for enterprise websites but also for smaller sites or landing pages. We constantly try to remove entry barriers and make it easier for everybody.

Q7
Sanjay Chauhan

TYPO3 is 20+ years old OpenSource CMS, Although we have very little CMS Marketshare. eg., At present, TYPO3 0.6%, WordPress 63.6%. In your personal opinion, What do you think about what we majorly missed in the TYPO3 journey?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

State of the art frontend template

Q8
Sanjay Chauhan

Unlike other CMS' where do you think the TYPO3 opensource ecosystem lags behind?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

TYPO3 users are not used to paying for extensions or services. Maybe this is related to the missing Shop or something else?

Q9
Sanjay Chauhan

For people, it’s challenging to understand the philosophy of OpenSource and Business together. What’s your opinion on making a successful OpenSource Eco-system by maintaining the ethics of OpenSource?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

The requirements for websites are so diverse and amount of customers so high, there is simply no need to keep developed extensions or knowledge behind closed doors - just the opposite - not required to develop something again what others already did enables developers and agencies to concentrate on other, new and exciting stuff.

Developing the 10th version of tt_address also means that this extension has to be maintained by you alone. Also, every feature needs to be done by yourself and nobody helps you with bug fixing.

Q10
Sanjay Chauhan

What do you think of the global expansion of TYPO3? What do you feel the TYPO3 OpenSource Eco-system needs most?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

Reaching more people and helping those to reach their goals in an easier way is always good. TYPO3 needs more people getting involved - in every manner.

Q11
Sanjay Chauhan

As we are managing T3Planet, TYPO3 Shop, What do you think about the t3planet.com? What are some key factors & characteristics that would attract you?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

I haven’t used this Shop yet but as a typical backend developer, I will give it a try for sure to avoid writing any CSS code ;) It’s great that there are so many templates available already!

Q12
Sanjay Chauhan

TYPO3 is built on PHP. PHP was established and it’s easy to understand. There was a huge community for PHP already. How important was that “TYPO3 was powered by PHP” for its popularity?

TYPO3 talk with Georg Ringer

Very important as PHP can just be copied to the server and it runs.
